Bornean Elephants & Jalan Arif

Social impact, Educational film, 2D animation, Illustration

On World Elephant Day, in partnership with Malaysian non-profit Seratu Aatai, we launched the first season of JALAN ARIF, a cartoon series made of 3x 1-minute episodes.

Episode 1

Bornean Elephant Introduction

Jalan Arif Episode 3: How You Can Help

Episode 3

Orphaned Elephant Response

Episode 2

Social Structures & Encounter Safety Protocols

The series centres around a road, Jalan Arif, and on that road, the unlikely friendship between teenage Bornean elephant, Arif (they call it sub-adult male in the serious conservation circles) and an oil palm worker, Ahmad.

Human-made roads are often at the centre of tensions between humans and wildlife. With this show, we want to educate workers in the fields about Bornean elephant behaviour and safety, but also reframe the roads from a place of conflict, to one of respect, and understanding, and exchange.

To hit its main audience, JALAN ARIF was created directly in Sabahan Malay. It was also created simultaneously both in vertical format for socials, and horizontal to serve as educational material in the field for STEM students and oil palm workers, along with material for the non-profit to be showcased at conferences.

The show has received very positive reviews locally, the episodes seeing an audience online of 150,000+ viewers and sparked conversations around peaceful coexistence between humans and wildlife in the region.

A second season is already in pre-production.

JALAN ARIF will return!
